This month's profile features Dr. Vincent Chollet, a physician and member of Medicol, specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as sports medicine. In his practice, he employs a holistic therapeutic approach that goes beyond the diagnosis and treatment of traumatic musculoskeletal injuries. He is interested in the physiology and biology of sport, as well as the specificities of sports practice, whether amateur or competitive. Passionate and respected in the sporting world, he is the chief physician for several sports clubs in the Lausanne region and for the Tour de Romandie cycling race.

In association with Medicol

Dr. Vincent Chollet studied medicine in Geneva, then completed his FMH (Swiss Medical Association) specialization in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG). Passionate about sports, he simultaneously pursued further training and obtained his certificate in sports medicine. In 2007, he joined the Hirslanden Bois-Cerf Clinic in Lausanne and became part of the Medicol network.

At Medicol, Dr. Vincent Chollet, in addition to his daily consultations, welcomes physicians pursuing the advanced interdisciplinary training diploma in sports medicine. As a postgraduate training site, recognized since 2016 by the Swiss Society of Sports Medicine (SSMS), Medicol offers aspiring physicians the opportunity to complete their internship with Dr. Vincent Chollet and Dr. Stéphane Borloz. In their practice, located opposite the Bois-Cerf Clinic, they take turns teaching the practical knowledge necessary for this field. In four years, they have trained more than five physicians employed by Medicol.

Dr. Vincent Chollet shares his expertise with healthcare professionals and the general public in Switzerland by participating in numerous conferences as a speaker. He is frequently invited to speak at the annual Medicol Congress of Orthopedic Surgery. In 2017, he and Dr. Stéphane Borloz addressed over 200 participants and colleagues on the possibilities and limitations of conservative hip surgery. For several years, they have jointly organized medical-sports symposia open to individuals from the health and sports fields. This year's theme focused on trail running and featured Diego Pazos, an athlete under Dr. Chollet's care, as a guest speaker.

Scientific activities

Passionate about physical activity, Dr. Vincent Chollet always wanted to work as a sports medicine physician. Since this is a specialized field, it requires a medical degree. After initially considering orthopedic surgery, he turned to physical medicine and rehabilitation following a sixth-year medical internship at a rehabilitation center for polytrauma patients.

Thanks to his two converging medical specializations, Dr. Vincent Chollet treats all musculoskeletal and neurological conditions, functional disorders, and cardiopulmonary diseases affecting both amateur and professional athletes. He cares for athletes of all levels with a wide range of problems and expectations. With his characteristic touch of humor, he describes himself as the "general practitioner for athletes," listening to the patient and assessing their physical and cognitive functions, athletic activity, nutrition, quality of life and training, as well as the improvement of personal and environmental factors. He is therefore responsible for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of conditions triggered or aggravated by sports activity. He is often the first point of contact for diagnosis, even before the orthopedic surgeon, for ligament sprains, tendinitis, and joint and muscle pain related to sports.

Dr. Vincent Chollet is strongly committed to multidisciplinary collaboration to promote integrated care. Indeed, after diagnosis, treatment is coordinated among several healthcare professionals, including physiotherapists and osteopaths, to address all aspects of the care plan. Therefore, he is deeply involved in providing training for future sports medicine physicians, as well as sharing his knowledge with young medical students, interns, and other specialists from across the healthcare field. He welcomes them to his practice to observe him during consultations and also participates as a speaker at conferences, notably with Medicol and within the French-speaking Swiss Network of Exercise and Sports Medicine. .

New products

Recently, there have been no major scientific innovations in sports medicine. For some years now, muscle and tendon injuries or degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis have often been treated with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to promote healing or hydration.

The most significant changes observed by Dr. Vincent Chollet are the increased demands and speed of results expected by athletes, as well as the broader range of patients who participate in a multitude of different sports. Injuries affect the entire population, including children, who are frequently affected by overuse injuries.

The current situation with COVID-19 is directly impacting the training of sports teams and clubs. Dr. Vincent Chollet is already preparing for the resumption of training and the monitoring of athletes. He is the head of the medical team for the Tour de Romandie, has been involved with the Lausanne Hockey Club for over ten years, and works with the dancers of the Béjart Ballet. He is also the referring physician for several basketball and volleyball clubs in the area.
