October's profile features Dr. Jocelyne Melchior Capiot, a specialist in internal medicine and rheumatology, who favors a holistic approach to treating non-surgical joint diseases. Her therapeutic goal is to minimize patient pain and help them achieve the best possible quality of life.

In association with Medicol

Originally from Belgium, Dr. Jocelyne Melchior Capiot studied medicine at the University of Louvain and then at the University of Lausanne. She practiced at the CHUV (Lausanne University Hospital) as an Assistant Clinical Head in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. Alongside her eleven years of hospital practice, she pursued training in manual medicine and mesotherapy.

A member of Medicol since 2016, she established her consulting practice in 2000 and moved her activity to the Bois-Cerf Clinic in 2018. This setting gives her the opportunity to exchange ideas daily with other member doctors and to participate in numerous continuing education activities.

Over the past few years, Dr. Melchior Capiot has also participated as a speaker at various events organized by Medicol and, this October, she will be present at the "Lunch Meetings" with a lecture on her favorite subject, spondyloarthropathies.

One of Medicol's missions is the training of young doctors. To this end, Medicol created the Ouchy Orthopedic Center, recognized in 2018 as an FMH (Swiss Medical Association) training center in orthopedics and traumatology. Dr. Melchior Capiot plans to extend this FMH recognition to rheumatology in order to train rheumatologists and thus ensure the next generation of medical professionals.

Scientific activities

Dr. Melchior Capiot is convinced that rheumatological conditions are not limited to the body but result from an interaction between the body and the mind.

Given the complexity and specific nature of musculoskeletal disorders related to rheumatism, Dr. Jocelyne Melchior Capiot focuses on the holistic care of patients, addressing both their physical and psychological well-being. She enjoys listening, establishing manual contact with her patients, and offering therapeutic approaches that complement her conventional medical practice.

In this context, she advocates treatments using laser acupuncture, mesotherapy, pulsed electromagnetic fields, and is currently developing mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) in pain management.

For a treatment plan to be successful, it is essential for her that the patient be an active participant in their treatment, regaining a participatory role while respecting their decision-making autonomy.

She has published several articles on the holistic approach to treating rheumatism. Others are currently being written.

New products

Through her clinical experience, Dr. Melchior Capiot has observed that the average time to diagnosis of spondyloarthritis is 8 years.

In this context and in order to support patients suffering from these inflammatory rheumatic diseases, Dr. Melchior Capiot plans to develop educational information materials that can be consulted by patients in the waiting rooms of doctors and physiotherapists in order to improve this diagnostic delay.

In parallel, she wishes to initiate an interdisciplinary reflection to improve the care and monitoring of patients and her vision for the future is to create, in collaboration with Medicol and its member doctors, a chronic pain support center, which combines all her scientific and personal efforts.
